PREFACE

The aim of the book with over 1,000 entries is to give an overall insight into aviation and a wide range of related matters. “Know it all,” in that sense.

Aviation related terms and facts are explained briefly. Also, some issues such as the human factors in the crash of AF447 (See AF447* 4½ Minutes from Taking Manual Control to Impact with Sea) are covered in detail.

There are few graphics, partly for lack of space but also because material, in color and even video, far better than we could ever provide here, can be found on the Internet. Copyright also prevents us printing the best.

Cases cited are mostly for the United States in the knowledge similar situations prevail elsewhere. Spelling and grammatical style are likewise as used in the US.

Our limited coverage of military platforms and weapons is merely to give some insight. This also applies to general and business aviation.
